LPDC crucible selection, lining maintenance, aluminum leakage risk investigation and life management
Crucible is the core container for containing aluminum liquid. Many factories only trace faults based on molds and processes. Cracking, inner lining erosion, and aluminum infiltration of crucibles are important sources of sudden aluminum leakage, production stoppage, and safety accidents.
1、 Quantitative standards for crucible material, capacity, and wall thickness
Mainstream material: ductile iron crucible, suitable for long-term continuous production, with a substrate wall thickness of 25-35mm; the conventional service life of cast iron crucible is 800-1500h.
Silicon carbide prefabricated crucible has better resistance to aluminum liquid erosion, a lifespan of 1500-2500h, higher cost, and is suitable for stable production lines of automotive parts.
Effective loading capacity of crucible: The weight of the working aluminum liquid should not exceed 75% of the rated capacity of the crucible, with reserved expansion space to prevent the aluminum liquid from boiling and overflowing.
The bottom wall thickness of the crucible is 5-10mm thicker than the side walls; the bottom is prone to erosion and cracking due to long-term sediment erosion and temperature fluctuations.
Xinfeng Machinery's matching crucible inspection checklist records inner wall erosion, aluminum infiltration, and cracks on an hourly basis, and provides early warning for replacement.
2、 Specification for Inner Lining Coating, Preheating, and Slag Removal Maintenance
Spray high-temperature resistant aluminum isolation coating on the cast iron crucible before going online, with a coating thickness of 0.3-0.5mm, to isolate the infiltration of aluminum liquid and reduce the excessive iron phase caused by iron dissolution into the aluminum liquid.
The new crucible must be preheated in sections: hold at 150 ℃ for 2 hours, hold at 350 ℃ for 2 hours, hold at 550 ℃ for 2 hours, and then add aluminum liquid; Adding aluminum directly to a cold crucible can easily cause cracking due to thermal shock.
Each shift sets a fixed point to remove the bottom sediment, which accumulates at the bottom and continuously corrodes the inner wall of the crucible; If the sediment thickness exceeds 10mm, it must be thoroughly cleaned.
Long term over temperature insulation is prohibited. Aluminum liquid should be kept above 760 ℃ for a long time to accelerate the dissolution of crucible substrate and the peeling of inner lining, leading to a rapid increase in iron content.
3、 Differences in crucible control for overseas customers
Ordinary cast iron crucibles are commonly used in Southeast Asia due to their low cost. After erosion, they are continued to be used until leakage occurs before replacement. The aluminum liquid iron content fluctuates greatly.
North American automotive parts require mandatory silicon carbide crucibles or cast iron crucibles with isolation coatings, with aluminum liquid iron content included in incoming material testing. The crucible replacement cycle is fixed and mandatory replacement is required upon expiration.
European customers monitor the iron content of aluminum liquid online, and an increase in iron content is used as a warning indicator for the failure of crucible lining. Early replacement is necessary to avoid batch material defects.
Middle Eastern large capacity crucible, with high ambient temperature, uses thickened silicon carbide crucible to reduce high temperature erosion and lower replacement frequency in high temperature environment.
4、 Crucible Failure Defect Chain
Without isolation coating, long-term high temperature → aluminum liquid infiltrates crucible substrate → iron dissolves into aluminum liquid → rich iron phase, resulting in decreased mechanical properties and increased brittleness of castings;
Direct feeding of cold crucible → thermal shock → microcracks in crucible → crack aluminum infiltration → gradual expansion, sudden aluminum leakage;
Long term non cleaning of bottom sediment → electrochemical corrosion of slag layer → preferential perforation and aluminum leakage at the bottom of the crucible.
5、 Long tail traffic layout ideas
Low pressure casting crucible, silicon carbide crucible, cast iron crucible, aluminum liquid iron content, aimed at melting supervisors and equipment safety officers.

6、 Common misconceptions in the industry
Misconception 1: If the crucible does not leak, it can continue to be used. The erosion and aluminum infiltration on the inner wall have been continuously polluting the aluminum liquid, and the iron phase exceeds the standard.
Misconception 2: The new crucible directly melts the aluminum material, causing hidden cracks due to severe thermal shock, which poses a safety hazard of aluminum leakage.
Misconception 3: The efficiency of filling the crucible with aluminum liquid is high, but the aluminum liquid expands when heated, making it prone to overflow and exacerbating oxidation.
